INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Laikipia University Library.

You are welcome to the library where you are at liberty to exploit the rich information resources available in both print and electronic formats. The library has a team of dedicated staff to ensure that your information needs are well met. The information resources focus on Education in its diverse forms; Research; Training; and Innovation. These are delivered through varied sections designed to make information access easy, fulfilling and stress free. These include: Circulation; Reserve, Reference; the Digital Library (for E-Resources); Africana & Special Collections; and Archives.

Brief Introduction of the University Library

Library information resources are accessible through the Laikipia University website, Library Web page. The resources include:

  • Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for print information resources
  • MyLOFT for e-books, e-journals, tutorial videos, and diverse forms of e-content.
  • Institutional Repository that accommodates Research reports such as Theses and Postgraduate projects, Newsletters, Graduation Booklets, and Public Lectures and Speeches; Examination past papers (however, requests Master's past examination papers should be done individually through librarysupport@laikipia.ac.ke).

Library Operational Hours

The Library opens as scheduled below: 

During the Semester:

Weekdays: 8.30 am to 8.30 pm

Saturdays: 8.30 am to 4.45 pm

Sundays and Public Holidays: Closed

During Vacations:

Weekdays: 8.30 to 4.45pm

Weekends and Public Holidays: Closed

 

The Library is open to all bona fide members of Laikipia University.  Non- university clients such as students from other universities and colleges, and the surrounding community shall be permitted to use the library as per the university regulations. 

Services Provided

The library offers a range of essential services to support academic and research activities:

  1. Circulation Services – Facilitating the borrowing and return of library materials.
  2. Information Services – Access to both print and electronic resources to meet users' diverse information needs.
  3. Electronic Information Access training and sensitization – this is done on a continuous basis at the E-Resources section
  4. Reference Services—including Current Awareness Services (CAS), Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), and access to archival materials for in-depth research support.
  5. Preservation Services – Ensuring the proper maintenance and longevity of library collections.
  6. Information Literacy Training – Equipping users with the skills to locate, evaluate, and effectively use information across various platforms and formats.
  7. Archives – Indexed information resources are mainly stored here.

Resources Available

  1. Electronic resources: The library subscribes to e-journals and e-books from diverse electronic databases.
  2. Books: The Library has about 30,000 print volumes in all taught programs of the University.
  3. Past Examination Papers: University past examination papers available to help users in their preparations for examinations. Hard copies available up-to 2022. Electronic accessible through the Institutional Repository.
  4. Theses and Dissertations from Laikipia University.
  5. Newspaper indexes: Indexing is done on topics relevant to users.
  6. Library Catalogue:
    • The Library has an updated print catalogue of the Library’s collection for users’ searching
    • Online Pubic Access Catalogue (OPAC) accessible online
